Why you can actually get this job

The role explicitly names Jamaica, Barbados, and Trinidad and Tobago in the allowed-countries list and is marketed as a contractor role for Latin America. The target user (Jamaica resident, UTC-5) falls within both geographic and timezone scope. The contractor employment path avoids G1 visa sponsorship conflicts. No language beyond English is required.

“Argentina, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil +22 more” Geographic scope — Caribbean named explicitly; included subject to G3 (which passed above).
“suriname” Geographic scope — Structured location list contains unrecognisable entries — templated artifact, not trusted as scope.
“Source-provided allowed countries: Argentina, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, French Guiana, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Uruguay, Venezuela” Geographic scope — Jamaica, Barbados, and Trinidad and Tobago are explicitly listed as eligible countries, directly covering the target user's residence.
“Source-provided allowed UTC offsets: -8, -7, -6, -5, -4, -3, -2” Timezone — UTC-5 is included in the allowed timezone range, matching the target user's location (Jamaica, no DST).
“This is a contractor role for candidates based in Latin America.” Employment path — Contractor designation means no visa sponsorship requirement applies; the target user can engage as an independent contractor without US work authorization.

About the role

About Engine

At Engine , we’re transforming business travel into something personalized, rewarding, and simple. For too long, managing travel and spend has been overwhelming and fragmented — we’re here to change that. We believe the future of travel should be seamless and powered by technology that delights customers at every step. That’s why we’re building a platform that brings together corporate travel, a powerful charge card, and modern spend management in one place.

  • To make this vision real, we’re looking for exceptional, mission-driven people to help redefine how businesses manage and experience travel.

More than 30,000 companies already rely on Engine to support over 1 million travelers and billions in annual bookings each year. Cash flow positive with rapid growth, we pair exclusive Engine -only rates, industry-leading rewards, and intelligent automation to help businesses save money while delivering world-class personalization and convenience.

Backed by Telescope Partners, Blackstone, and Permira, Engine has been recognized as one of the fastest-growing travel and fintech platforms in North America, with honors including the Deloitte Fast 500 and Built In’s Best Places to Work.

The Role

The Travel Management team owns the systems that make Engine work for enterprise customers — travel policies, travel controls, account hierarchy, roles and permissions, and granular policies across lodging, flights, and cars. This is where scale meets configurability, and where the platform earns the trust of the largest companies we serve.

We're looking for a Senior Software Engine er who can design distributed backend systems, make tough calls with incomplete information, and drive scalable, enterprise-grade solutions across a highly cross-functional environment. You'll be a heavy backend contributor, working on greenfield architecture and re-architecting existing components as we unlock the next stage of the platform.

What You'll Do

  • Re-architect account hierarchy — migrating from single-user-per-business assumptions to a scalable model that supports complex parent-child business relationships
  • Build out dynamic travel policies that scale across lodging, flights, and cars for enterprise customers
  • Evaluate what stays in the monolith vs. moves to microservices — and make the call
  • Collaborate closely with business stakeholders on negotiations and tough product calls
  • Partner with frontend engineers on the team to ship features end-to-end
  • Contribute to a future policies service where compiled languages (Go / Rust) are on the table

What We're Looking For

Required

  • Strong backend engineering fundamentals in Node / TypeScript
  • Hands-on experience with a compiled language (Go or Rust)
  • Solid relational database experience (Postgres, MySQL) and distributed systems knowledge
  • AWS and serverless architecture experience (Lambda)
  • Conviction with rationale — you make decisions with incomplete information, own them, and move forward
  • Highly cross-functional — you'll interface directly with business partners on negotiations and product decisions
  • Comfortable operating in ambiguity and negotiating outcomes across engineering and business
  • Insist on high standards — for your code, your systems, and your team

Nice to Have

  • Ruby on Rails experience (some of our services are on Rails)

React or frontend exposure

  • Prior experience building multi-tenant enterprise systems, permissions frameworks, or policy engines
